Optimizing Patient Care Pathways: Impact Analysis of an AI-Assisted Smart Referral System for Musculoskeletal Services
The NHS is facing ever-growing demands for musculoskeletal (MSK) services. With an ageing population and an increasing number of people suffering from MSK conditions, the current referral system is often overwhelmed, leading to delays in treatment, fragmented care, and administrative bottlenecks. These challenges can prolong waiting times and cause patients to miss out on timely interventions.
To address these issues, our team developed an AI-assisted Smart Referral System (SRS) aimed at transforming how MSK referrals are managed. This innovative system includes a web portal for patient self-referrals, an AI-powered triage system that provides real-time recommendations to both patients and clinicians, and a streamlined digital pathway for referral processing.
The study, conducted over 12 months, shows the SRS has reduced incomplete referrals, saved time, and cut costs for both administrative and clinical staff.
